Depraved Heart

I haven't been feeling too well lately. My arthritis is really bothering me. So I treated myself to a couple of new books and this is the one that I am reading now...Depraved Heart: A Scarpetta Novel (Kay Scarpetta). I have always read Patricia Cornwell books. I love the way they are written and the story lines are always written in a way that makes for a night of reading instead of sleep.

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is working a suspicious death scene in Cambridge, Massachusetts when an emergency alert sounds on her phone. A video link lands in her text messages and seems to be from her computer genius niece Lucy. But how can it be? It’s clearly a surveillance film of Lucy taken almost twenty years ago.
As Scarpetta watches she begins to learn frightening secrets about her niece, whom she has loved and raised like a daughter. That film clip and then others sent soon after raise dangerous legal implications that increasingly isolate Scarpetta and leave her confused, worried, and not knowing where to turn. She doesn’t know whom she can tell—not her FBI husband Benton Wesley or her investigative partner Pete Marino. Not even Lucy.
In this new novel, Cornwell launches these unforgettable characters on an intensely psychological odyssey that includes the mysterious death of a Hollywood mogul’s daughter, aircraft wreckage on the bottom of the sea in the Bermuda Triangle, a grisly gift left in the back of a crime scene truck, and videos from the past that threaten to destroy Scarpetta’s entire world and everyone she loves. The diabolical presence behind what unfolds seems obvious—but strangely, not to the FBI. Certainly that’s the message they send when they raid Lucy’s estate and begin building a case that could send her to prison for the rest of her life.
In the latest novel in her bestselling series featuring chief medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Cornwell will captivate readers with the shocking twists, high-wire tension, and cutting-edge forensic detail that she is famous for, proving yet again why she’s the world’s #1 bestselling crime writer.

Always!

HERITAGE ~ Free Kindle Book

HERITAGE was a free book for the kindle at the time of this posting. Has pretty good reviews. A good mystery with a twist.

A psychological thriller !

On September 6th, 1965, Sutter Wayne Thomas, 8, went missing from the Mecklenburg County Fairgrounds in Charlotte, North Carolina. He remained missing for eight years, and when he returned, horribly scarred and disfigured, he remembered nothing of where he had been, who had taken him, or what had happened to him. His abductor was never apprehended, or even identified.

30 years later, Sutter is a highly-successful true crime author and a public relations agent for missing children, lending his fame and fortune to the efforts for their safe return. For the most part he has adjusted to the world around him, though any lingering effects from his ordeal flare to the forefront when on the exact anniversary of his abduction, another 8-year-old boy goes missing from the exact place, at the exact time, in the exact way Sutter had.

HERITAGE is the story of not only of Sutter but of Patrick Lucas, the 8 year-old being held in the boiler room of a derelict castle at Heritage USA, an abandoned theme park; Dale Hartman, the detoxing heroin junkie hiding from his dealer/employer in a motel on theme park grounds; and Patrick’s unknown abductor who, if suggestive newspaper clippings being sent anonymously to Sutter are to be believed, just might be the same man who abducted Sutter 30 years earlier.

These four lives collide in horrifying and unpredictable ways as the investigation into Patrick’s abduction – and the media circus that goes with it – ramps up into full swing. Though there are no immediate suspects, the similarities to Sutter’s own abduction are pointing in an uncomfortable direction, and as this already-fragile man tries to rectify his unknown past with his turbulent present, missing fragments come to light in ways that transform not only the man, but the case, and the lives of everyone involved.

A psychological thriller dealing with issues of identity, victimhood, and the many forms of family, HERITAGE is a taut and surprising mystery where no one is certain and nothing can be trusted.

A Best Friend!

Psyched ~ Free Kindle Book

Psyched was free for the kindle at the time of this posting. This is a good book! I read it a while ago and when I seen that it was free I wanted to share it. It has great reviews.

Aisi Turay has it all under control.

At least, she thinks she does. Forget that she just discovered her little brother is tormented by the ghosts and demons she sees all the time. Forget that her mom is a con artist who would probably exploit Aisi's psychic abilities if she knew about them. Forget that her dad is hiding a secret than can destroy everything she knows about herself. Nope, she's got this one...until that one awful day when she nearly loses it all.

With ghost hunter Vance, a distractingly cute college guy who stumbled into her life at the worst possible moment, Aisi must search for the messages hidden in visions and memories to protect her family. Only together can they uncover the horrors hidden in her family's past. Maybe together, just maybe, they can reclaim what she thought was lost forever.

Tomorrow I Will Kill Again ~ Free Kindle Book

Tomorrow I Will Kill Again was a free kindle book when this post was written. Check the pricing.

HOW WELL DO YOU REALLY KNOW THE ONES YOU LOVE?
HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOURSELF?

"...Paul woke from the nightmare sweating and gasping. He couldn’t believe it, but he’d actually shed a few tears. Images he could not quite recall flitted around his thoughts like dark songbirds. Something red. Something wet and heavy. He tried to stop his heart from throwing itself against his chest like a caged animal... He could feel the presence of someone else in their home..."

Paul Kenner, a rising star in the world of historical war novels, has just moved in to his dream home. Everything is finally falling into place for him and his wife Jen; that is, until writer's block sets in. When he begins writing a disturbing, yet childish horror novel, flying though the pages far faster than he'd ever worked on his books before, he doesn't want to believe that anything is wrong. Yet it's hard to ignore the thing in the woods near his home. The old thing, the wicked thing... the thing that's been calling him closer.

The thing that calls him "friend."

I Love Reading Cookbooks

I can sit and read Cookbooks all the time. I just love looking at the recipes and the photos. I even try the recipes out every once in a while. It is fun to hunt for new items to fix for my family. I have found a lot of my family favorites in my cookbooks. I have so many cookbooks now that I have had to start storing them in boxes. Not enough shelves or room for new shelves in my house. But, I can't find myself wanting to get rid of them. My books of all kinds are like a best friend and will be with me for life.

The Coffin Trader ~ Free Kindle Book

The Coffin Trader is a free kindle book at the time of this posting. It has great reviews.

When a bellhop at a New York hotel is found murdered in a young teacher’s tiny office at a backwoods Connecticut college, she can’t offer the police any connection between her and the dead man. A week later, she finds a canvas bag in the staff room fridge. Inside it are two scraps of brittle paper and a gold bar stamped with an eagle and swastika cross – Hitler’s logo. If the crest is real, then the ownership of the gold bar is a crime. She decides to see a friend at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, who can help determine whether the bar is authentic. Much to her surprise he focuses on the scraps of paper and then warns her that secrets tattooed into patches of human skin, far more than the gold bar, are deadly—considering who had opted to hide his secrets in such manner. Forty-eight hours later, her friend is dead and the only man she can turn to for help is the one who betrayed her ten years ago.

Death Has No Hold ~ Free Kindle Book

Death Has No Hold has very good reviews and , at the time of this posting, the kindle edition was free.

Being queen of Teylia Island did not satisfy Lucienda Vaneesia Lamont's lust for power and glory. She took pride in controlling and manipulating lives. Anyone who opposed her was punished. Four individuals in particular were the primary recipients of her wrath - her oldest daughter, Natalie, who became a Christian, married a commoner and turned her back on her mother and the throne - her - daughter's husband, Edward who influenced Natalie's decisions, Will Malroy, the father of her two children and Gillis Tavish Rouseau, Lucienda's husband.

"Not only did she pour her wrath upon them while she lived, but set things in order to torment them after she was dead and gone. She seemed to have tentacles that could reach from the grave."

Had she and her god not proven their superiority to the God of her daughter and her husband in succeeding to take their lives while they lived and in death forever? Or was there something she had not figured on, something that could use her own accomplishments against her?

Could death seal the fates of her victims or did death itself have no hold?

Share The Love Of Reading With Our Kids

Today is a great day for a homeschooling family. Snowing and cold. We don't have anywhere we need to go to and lots of books and hot chocolate. My 9 year old son and I are going to spend some of today just being lazy and reading. He got several new books for Christmas.

Sometimes , if your child doesn't seem to have any interest in reading , you have to find ways to get them to read by finding books that are about things that interest them. My son is into video games, zombies, Minecraft, Pokemon,  and a lot of science. So this book, The Last Kids on Earth, was the perfect book for him.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid meets The Walking Dead in this very funny post-apocalyptic graphic novel for middle-grade readers.

Ever since the monster apocalypse hit town, average thirteen year old Jack Sullivan has been living in his tree house, which he's armed to the teeth with catapults and a moat, not to mention video games and an endless supply of Oreos and Mountain Dew scavenged from abandoned stores. But Jack alone is no match for the hordes of Zombies and Winged Wretches and Vine Thingies, and especially not for the eerily intelligent monster known only as Blarg. So Jack builds a team: his dorky best friend, Quint; the reformed middle school bully, Dirk; Jack's loyal pet monster, Rover; and Jack's crush, June. With their help, Jack is going to slay Blarg, achieve the ultimate Feat of Apocalyptic Success, and be average no longer! Can he do it?

Told in a mixture of text and black-and-white illustration, this is the perfect book for any kid who's ever dreamed of starring in his or her own comic book or video game. And stay tuned for the sequel, The Last Kids on Earth and the Zombie Parade, coming in Fall 2016!
